Answers to losing weight & getting faster with Science
What is RMR - Resting Metabolic Rate?
RMR
is the minimum number of calories your body needs to support its basic
physiological functions, including breathing, circulating blood and all
of the numerous biochemical reactions required to keep you alive.
Your RMR is generally 60-75% of your total daily caloric expenditure.Knowing
the minimum number of calories your body needs is important if you're
trying to lose, gain or maintain your current weight.
MEASURED RMR VS. ESTIMATIONS
When RMR is
calculated by estimations it is subject to significant error – as much
as 20% to 25%.* This can lead to an inappropriate nutritional plan for
your client.
The "gold standard" for determining RMR is through indirect calorimetry
using a metabolic analyzer which measures both VO2 and VCO2.
WHY MEASURE RMR?
Everyone's metabolism and caloric needs are different.
Your body's metabolism is affected by:
Genetics
Age
Gender
Height
Body Composition
Activity Level
Other physical and environmental factors

Sample Online Trend Report (Initial & follow up RMR assessment). Results reveal the metabolism has increased, resting heart rate has dropped as a result of an exercise program, and an increase in the use of fat usage while at rest. This report allowed this individual to see that their efforts are paying off and also has allowed for adjustments to their daily intake.
Before the Assessment
Dress comfortably in loose fitting clothing.
Fast overnight. Don't eat or drink (except water) for at least 12 hours.
Don't engage in any strenuous exercise the day before the assessment (don't work out for more than 60 minutes) and avoid physical activity as much as possible on the morning of the assessment (don't work out at all).
If you take insulin, do not take your morning dose until after your assessment. Take all other medications as usual. Bring all your medications with you to the assessment.
You will be asked to read and sign an Informed Consent that explains the purpose, benefits, and risks associated with the assesment.
The fitness professional administering the assessment will explain the assessment procedures to you in detail and you may ask questions.
The fitness professional will measure your height and weight.
You will place the breathing mask over your nose and mouth and breath normally for a few minutes to become familiar with the process. You will need to breathe through your mouth only.
During the Assessment
The assessment is conducted in a quiet, dimly lighted room. You will lie down or recline in a comfortable position for about 15 minutes.
You will wear the breathing mask and breath normally. The air you breath will be the air present in the room you are in. Tubes from the facemask are connected to the VO2 P.A.S., which will analyze the air that is exhaled.
Try to relax as much as possible, but don't fall asleep. Lie still and don't fidget or look around. Don't sit up and don't talk unless you are experiencing problems.
After the Assessment
You will remove the mask. Your mask becomes your personal property and can be used again for repeat RMR assessments.
Your results will be uploaded to a personal online account and we'll review the results with you.
You should plan to have a snack or breakfast after the assessment.
