Over the years, I feel like I've gotten a lot of seemingly contradictory
or partial information about diet and exercise.
When I came to Johnny
at Third Coast Training, I had decided that what I needed was real data
about me to try to help guide my diet and fitness goals. In working with
Johnny, it finally all 'clicked'. I finally feel like I've got a good
handle on not only what I need to do, but why and how I fit into the
overall metabolic scheme of things.

I started cycling about 4 years ago to lose weight and
improve my fitness level.
After 3 years of directing my own training, I
had hit the wall. I wasn't improving anymore, my weight was up, and
people I used to beat were blowing me out the back of the peleton. In short, I
was burned out. I started training with Third Coast
in January. In just two months, I'm down 20 lbs, my energy level is
up, my heart rate is down, recovery is lightning quick, and I'm excited
about riding my bike again.

Thanks for helping me discover that missing link in my
nutrition and training.
Your nutrition plan is easy to follow and testing
methods keep me motivated. I've never felt this good before the start of my
previous 5 race seasons. I can't wait to test my new engine at my first race.

RAGBRAI was a breeze and I rode my first century during the event
In my very late 40's I spent a couple of years spinning my wheels
trying to get back in shape. On the suggestion of a friend I went to
Third Coast Training looking for help getting ready to
ride RAGBRAI. Johnny's approach makes sense and it works. RAGBRAI. was a breeze and I rode my first century during the event. The
following year I rode RAGBRAI. again, completed 15 century rides, did a 730
mile bicycle tour, finished my first triathlon, and ran my first
marathon. I don't know how people train without the tools and nutrition
counseling Johnny provides. Thanks so much for the help and
encouragement.

Thank you so much for helping me train for my first
marathon. - Chicago Marathon
I ran the entire race, felt great, and even had some energy
for a little burst at the end. I had my doubts several times during the
training. There were times I thought you had me running too much, not
enough, too fast or slow, but the end result was a great run beating my
time goal! (PB 3:34:45).
Thanks,

My focus
is on bicycling and weight management.
I started working with Third Coast Training over a year ago. My focus
is on bicycling and weight management. When I started I could barely
complete the workouts. Now I can complete a 90 minute RPM class and
still want more. I've also moved on to adding in weight training. I've
increased my weight lifting from 10 lb arm weights to 40 lb in just
under 6 months and leg lifting from 40 lb to 120 lb in the same time
frame. I can also walk on the treadmill for 60 minutes with no problems
whereas before I started working with Johnny I did good completing 10
minutes without getting breathless. Thanks for being my support,
Johnny. I'm looking forward to my retesting and getting my next round
of workouts. I'll schedule for sometime in December.

I completed my first marathon! I ran Chicago a
few weeks ago. I don't think I would have felt capable of training for or
running the marathon if it had not been for the triathlons I
completed. And...I wouldn't have trained for the triathlons if it
wasn't for your encouragement and program.
So...thank you!

I wanted to give you my Memphis Marathon race results.
It was a good training race and I had alot of energy left at the end. The nutrition worked out real well. I opted to try and keep the heart rate in lower zone 1 and just have a good race while still feeling well at the finish. The training program worked great! It gave me nearly a 25 min PR!

Having just completed my third Ironman distance triathlon in Louisville,
Kentucky,
I can honestly say that Third Coast Training's Triathlon Program works.
Normally, I can't WAIT to get off the bike. This time, I arrived in
T2 feeling like I could have ridden more. I'm looking forward to next
season and the progress I'm bound to make with Third Coast Training.

Wow that felt good!
In
February of 2008 I found myself at the Mayo Clinic trying to figure
out what was causing problems with the instability and loss of strength
in my left leg. It looked like Ironman distance triathlons might be
out of the question for me, until I met Johnny with Third Coast Training.
I started my first day of training with Johnny on August 1st,
2008. Only 3 MONTHS to get back into Ironman shape. The program
was challenging, but it paid off.
At the age of 40, I ran a 10:48 Ironman
Florida. That topped my 11:13 Florida time in 2001 at the age of 32.
Wow that felt good!
I
could not have prepared for an event like this in 3 months without Johnny’s
expertise. Thanks so much for your coaching and friendship.

The test was simple to understand, and I
was amazed at how much info were were able to gather during the
testing.
I met Johnny when he came by the shop one day to drop off some
brochures for third coast. We started chatting, and as I learned what
he was offering I became more and more interested. Up to this point NWA
had no service like he was offering. He suggested that I come by and
get tested. I figured why not and we scheduled a time that would work
for my schedule.
I arrived at the third coast training studio
on the morning of the test. The space was clean and simple. Johnny's
approach was very profesional. He outlined what we were going to do and
what we would learn from it. The test was simple to understand, and I
was amazed at how much info were were able to gather during the
testing. I had just started riding competitively again and had several
events on my horizon that I had set for myself as goals. Using the data
and analyzing my goals, Johnny was able to help me develop a plan to
reach my full potential.
I
quickly discovered that for quite some time I had not been using my
time on the bike wisely, and had not been fueling properly either. I
experienced the fastest gains that I have ever had using the third
coast training method. I recommend it to anyone no matter what level of
athlete you are. I promise that Johnny can give you the tools that you
need to reach the pinnacle of your performance. The rest is up to you.

The great thing about having Johnny as a Triathlon coach
is that you get a coach
that gives you lots of personal attention. He is full of usefull
information, and without his help I would not have done very well at my
first triathlon. My training with him had just began but the impact he
had was amazing. I look forward to where his expert advice will take
me in the future.

November 08 This is the first time that I feel like I am actually working out with
a purpose,
and doing something that is making a difference in my body.
I was already working out, but just didn't understand my metabolism
and what my body needed. I have already lost 6.8 pounds in 2 weeks!
The exercise and diet have finally come together for me in a way that
I've never been able to achieve on my own.

When I started bicycle racing two and half years
ago, I had no idea how to train.
I
was lucky to meet coach Johnny early in my cycling career. He put me on a sound
training program that kept me injury free and allowed me to improve my power at
lactate threshold by more than 25% in one year. The periodic lactate threshold
tests we conducted allowed Johnny to precisely measure my improvements, so he
could tell me exactly how much I needed to increase my training intensity as I
grew stronger. This was important because if I didn't increase my intensity
enough, I wouldn't improve, but if I increased my intensity too much, my body
would break down, and I'd become slower. Johnny's program eliminated all the
guess work with my training and allowed me just to focus on riding and having
fun. In the two years I worked with Johnny, I went from being dropped in nearly
all my races, to putting more than a minute into the second place finisher at
my state's recent time trial championship. Coach Johnny's methods definitely
produce results.

This race season was very good. My
national ranking went to number 11 in 50+.
Since I am being ranked with guys 5 years younger than me this makes it more
impressive and when you consider there are over 1000 ranked...and thousands
more that are competing but not ranked...this even sweetens the deal. Also to
note, at that time,(July), I was ranked in the top 200 of all racers over 30.
This is out of 30+ ranked racers....many, many, thousands.
Point is...Thanks for the help!!

Lactate & VO2 Testing
Michael
and I would like to thank Johnny Shelby for his help and support over the last
couple of years in our pursuit of our goals in cycling. Johnny offered help in
bike fitting, nutrition, and training. Johnny helped identify Michael (my son)
potential through state of the art Lactate & VO2 testing. This
allowed up to properly set his training zones and train appropriately.

Lactate & VO2 Testing
In the last 12 months, due in large part to the precise physiological testing
you provide, I have taken my Avg 40k bike speed from 21.6 to 22.8 and my 10k
mile pace from 8:30 to 6:55. I look forward to another season of steady improvement.

The fitting you did is
really paying off, and I love riding the bike again!
My biking is amazing! The fitting you did is really paying off, and I
love riding the bike again! Informally during the test I think my wattage
improved from 145 to 180 at 140HR (20%), which would maybe result in 5% speed
increase. Now as I am used to the new position I think it has actually
translated into a 10-20% speed increase! 2 months ago I could not do 20mph hour
average over an hour, now I did about 24 mph(18miles) after a super fast 3mile
run. By the way, I was so darn fast that, I won my age group!

Deathride 2004 , 15,000
ft of climbing
Johnny, Thanks so much for helping me obtain my goal! When I was looking for a Cycling Coach to help me prepare for the Deathride, I
contacted a couple of businesses. After they told me "there is not enough
time to prepare for this event," I became discouraged. Your methodical
approach to training helped me increase my strength and endurance. In addition,
your encouragement and positive attitude helped me to mentally prepare for the
129 miles, 15,000 feet of climbing, 7-12% grade, and the long hours in the saddle
for this one day event. Thanks again for your guidance, encouragement, and friendship.
Best of luck to you, Jeff Sipek
